When searching for free Vray materials, you probably came across this website: www.vray-materials.de. It's a good resource for Vray materials, but they usually need some tweaking to get them into your scenes correctly. In this tutorial, we go over the entire process, from downloading the material, to editing and applying it to your own 3D objects. This tutorial will also apply to many other free Vray materials you can find online!

This tutorial was created with V-ray version 2.0 . You will probably be able to follow along with older versions, but some screenshots may vary, or some settings may be missing or will have a slightly different effect on image quality.

The included max files are all created in 3D Studio Max 2013, but saved as 3D Studio Max 2010 files. So they will open fine in any Max version from 2010 up, but you will not be able to open them in older ones!

What will you learn?

Edit the sample scene

To ensure much faster render times, we will edit the sample scene from www.vray-materials.de. We'll also edit the texture paths and materials so everything looks as intended.

Inspect a custom material

After downloading a more interesting material, we'll go over it step by step to see how it has been set up. It is important to understand how the material is built, to be able to edit it later on.

Vray Displacement

The material features Vray displacement, so we'll cover the basics of this nice Vray feature and edit it to our needs.

Vray blend material: Gold and wood

The chosen Vray material is a mix of 2 materials: gold and wood. The special Vray blend material is used to blend them together by using a bitmap texture.

Apply material to custom objects

When we edited the material to our needs, the next step is to apply it to custom objects in the scene. This requires some work as we need to transfer UVW mapping data, Vray displacement modifiers etc...

Convert to gamma 2.2 setup

As a final step, we'll go over the process of editing everything so it looks good when you use the gamma 2.2 setup.
You can read more about gamma 2.2 setup by clicking here.
